Oral Health: Skin of Your Teeth

Learning Activities: SAY

Guess The Word

Ask pupils to find out the meaning of a word associated with oral health. Examples might include: Acid, Decay, Dentist, Filling, Flossing, Gums, Mouthwash, Plaque, Sugar, Toothbrush. Other words can also be used. Pupils can be asked to find out as much as they can about the meaning of the word they are given. They are then asked to describe the word to their class mates without saying the word itself and class mates are asked to guess the word..

Discussion (Favourite Character)

Who is your favourite character in the Skin of Your Teeth film? Why? What do you like about them? Who is your least favourite character? Why? What don’t you like about them?

Discussion (Young Man In Waiting Room)

The young man in the dentist’s waiting room talks about lots of terrible things that he says have happened to people visiting the dentist. What kinds of things does he say? Do you think he is telling the truth? Why do you think he says these things?

Discussion (Annie’s Mum)

Think about the character of Annie’s mum. What do you think of her? How do you think she could do a better job of getting Annie to brush her teeth and to look after her mouth?

Discussion (Making Movies)

Look at the different pictures that show the making of the “Skin of Your Teeth” film (this includes “Improvising”, “Rehearsing”. “Filming” and “Lights, Camera, Action”). There are lots of different roles involved in making a film like this: writing, acting, filming and so on. What kinds of things would you like to do if you were making a film like this? Imagine you had to persuade a friend that they should watch this film. What would you say to persuade them?
